The Officers and Members of the Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Company would like to honor two outstanding individuals whose quick thinking and decisive actions played a crucial role in averting a potentially devastating disaster. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Gunner Blackiston and Cydni Fletcher for their remarkable bravery following an alarming incident that transpired on Sunday, August 24th, 2025.
At approximately 15:38, the Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Company, alongside multiple mutual aid agencies, was dispatched to respond to a structure fire at 5032 Crosby Road. Upon arrival, fire crews were met with the sight of a fast-spreading blaze that had originated outside and encroached upon the residence itself. It was amidst this chaotic scene that Gunner and Cydni emerged as exemplary citizens.
While riding through their neighborhood on a golf cart, Gunner and Cydni detected smoke billowing from the rear of the property. Demonstrating exceptional situational awareness and courage, Gunner immediately took action by racing to his grandparents' house to retrieve a fire extinguisher. Simultaneously, Cydni dialed 9-1-1 to notify emergency responders of the unfolding crisis.
Their timely intervention significantly mitigated the spread of the fire prior to the arrival of fire crews. By alerting the family within the home—comprising two adults, two children, and their beloved dog—they ensured that all occupants were safely evacuated from harm’s way.
Once fire crews arrived on scene, they were able to effectively extinguish the flames that had threatened not only property but lives as well. Following this incident, we are pleased to report that no injuries were sustained by any individuals involved. The American Red Cross was subsequently engaged to provide temporary housing and support for the affected family during their time of need.
An investigation into the cause of this fire has been initiated by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's office to ensure thorough understanding and prevention of such incidents in future.
Today, we celebrate Gunner Blackiston and Cydni Fletcher not only for their quick response but also for embodying the spirit of community service that defines us all. Their actions remind us that even in times of crisis, it is often ordinary citizens who rise heroically to protect others. Let us recognize them with our deepest appreciation for their selflessness and bravery in service to our community.
